“The Sanctity of Everyday Things”: Meet BJM Volunteer Emily Leong

Meet Emily, a full-time nurse with a heart for crafts, her church, and connecting with others. Emily has been a long-time support of BJM, first volunteering at Nail Day in 2017 and later going on to volunteer in all our departments, including helping with our gala, praying over our EdenMade outreach and assisting in our dance classes. Emily has been faithful to our community, & we're grateful for the joy she carries with her.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with BJM?
”I love that BJM is a space by women, for women. I love that BJM is oriented toward full-person flourishing that honors the reality of God and God's goodness, and I love that BJM is intentionally and fantastically in touch with its relationship to the Tenderloin and San Francisco.”

Do you have a favorite memory from a time volunteering?
”I have a memory of a particularly precious conversation with Lisa Demb at the art table at Nail Day (which I captured with a photo I now cherish). I also delight in the memory of a certain dance student who wore a certain furry hat to dance class all semester and would occasionally make the hat dance along with the choreography in class.”

How do you see God at work in your time with us?
”I see God at work in the way BJM holds space for women and girls to discover their voices, in the way BJM insists that women and girls are wonderfully and fearfully made, in the way that BJM recognizes the sanctity of the everyday things of life (like coffee dates and dance classes,) and the way that BJM tires to makes spaces that feel like home, as defined by the women and girls they host.”
