A Joy To Journey Together — Meet BJM Donor Denise Fong

Meet Denise Fong: Bay-area native who is passionate about technology, marketing, faith, and journeying alongside BJM as a donor and prayerful supporter.

Denise has been a part of our community for nearly a decade—since the days we were operating entirely out of the YWAM San Francisco building and Ruthie Kim, our founder, was leading mission teams who visited to serve in our neighborhood. Denise was one of those visitors. “That trip was a big ah-ha moment for me,” says Denise. “I saw what it’s actually like to work in a community that’s impacted by poverty, and I experientially deepened my understanding of God’s love for each of us.”

On that trip, Denise and her teammates spent time prayer walking, participating in YWAM’s hot chocolate ministry, and befriending folks who call the Tenderloin home. “We met individuals who shared their stories and showed me that homelessness is sometimes just bad luck or chance. It’s not that the person didn’t work hard or didn’t try. Sometimes there are challenges that you can’t overcome, no matter how much you want to. Ever since then, I’ve had a really big heart for Ruthie, for BJM, and for the vision of building pathways to brighter futures for women who don’t have access to the resources that others do.”

Denise has also volunteered at our annual Family Fun Fest carnival several times, which has changed the way she sees the neighborhood. “When you walk through the Tenderloin as a tech worker, all you see are the adults, the people in the streets. But when you do something like Family Fun Fest, you suddenly see all the complexity and diversity in the Tenderloin. You see that there are so many families that live there! I feel like I have this insider-knowledge of the neighborhood. Now when I walk through that area, I see it very differently than my friends.”

Knowing what she knows about the Tenderloin, Denise decided that she would commit to us through contributing financially and prayerfully, and offering her tech skills when we need them. “It’s a joy to journey together with the BJM team,” says Denise. We couldn’t agree more.

We would love to have you be a part of our BJM family too, whether that’s as a volunteer, a prayer partner, or a donor. Click here to learn more about partnering with us financially, or email info@becausejusticematters.org to be added to our prayer and volunteer newsletter lists.
