Wonder with Families

Wonder… Expectantly and Hopefully Waiting in Community

by Sylvia Kamande, Families Ministry Director

This has been the theme over the last few months in the Family Ministry. In every program and conversation I have had with a family there has been expectation in God, and hope that He will not let them down.

One family mom lost her job suddenly and as she was sharing over the breakfast table and wiping her away her tears  she said,

“ Dios es fiel el nunca nos falla y tenemos que esperar y confiar pero aveces es dificil creer, pero vamos a confiar… “ God is faithful He never fails us and we need to trust Him but at times it's hard to believe but we will trust''

All the moms, grandmas, aunties nodded in agreement.

Wonder in this season for families has been expectantly hoping and waiting that God would…

  • Provide stable housing before their baby is born

  • Help get them a new job

  • Connect them to the right immigration lawyer

  • That their daughter will be able to go the college of her dreams

  • That they will meet someone who can coach them as they seek to know the Lord more

  • Keep their children safe and healthy

  • Provide a culturally appropriate space for them to attend Zumba classes

  • Connect with a community and resources that they need

The list could go on; some of these prayers have been fully answered, others partially and  some not yet. Through the different touch points we have had this season one sentiment has been echoed over and over… We too are expectantly and hoping with you, your community stands with you.

Our hope is that when the families leave here tonight, a sense of wonder would have been sparked in their hearts because we see them and that means they no longer have to carry their burdens alone. Through the Christmas baskets we hope the words spoken in Ephesians 3:20 would become evident in their lives:

that God can do exceedingly and abundantly more than they can ask, hope or imagine. We need just wait, trust, because He will not tarry

As we continue to develop this community, Wonder will expectantly wait for God to come through. Investing in families provides us with the possibility of co-laborer with Christ as agents of Wonder in the these families lives.

As I look around at Operation Santa Claus this year, what I see is, through the Christmas gift baskets, the empanadas, alfajores and a variety of homemade desserts being enjoyed. The laughter going in the background coming from the different craft stations. No one here is no longer isolated in their waiting, be it for families who have been with us over the years and new ones.
